Community Flood
Monitoring Network

Vision:  to provide free flood information through crowd-sourced inputs from the community, private and public sectors.
Floods are the most costly natural disaster in terms of loss to life and livelihood. However, they are also the most predictable and preventable natural disaster. In 2018, over 3,600 people were killed around the world due to flooding.

One of the most cost effective ways to manage floods is using flood forecasting and warning systems. These systems rely on rainfall and river level measurements from around the river catchment. Availability of flood forecasts can empower communities to prepare for and respond to floods. Depending on the warning time available, communities can harvest crops, protect their homes and belongings, and move away from dangerous areas.

MyFlood.net is a not-for-profit scheme aimed at engaging the community to measure river levels using their mobile phones. All that's needed is for someone to take a picture of a flood gauge, and share it on social media. MyFlood.net will automatically determine the river level from the photo and make the data available to forecasting agencies through a free on-line service.
